Most Diablo 4 players are farming Greater Lair Keys inefficiently because they treat the boss as the finish line. The real loop ends when you open the Hoard, check the Unique pool, and decide whether the drop supports your build or simply eats stash space. That makes smart material planning more valuable than a giant pile of D4 Gold sitting unused, especially once your character already has competitive DPS.
The Key Is Spent After the Kill
You don't need a Greater Lair Key to enter a Greater Lair Boss fight. The key opens your personal Hoard after the boss dies, so joining a group run doesn't remove the need to maintain your own supply. That detail changes how you plan sessions: collect standard Lair Keys, clear Initiate bosses, and treat every Hoard as a possible step toward the next tier.
Initiate targets include Beast in the Ice, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Varshan, and Urivar. Pick the one your loadout kills fastest while still offering a useful Unique pool. A slower boss with a theoretically better reward can lose badly on loot per hour once travel, invulnerability phases, deaths, and inventory sorting enter the picture.
A Better Farming Loop
War Plans are the backbone of the process because they can provide key-related rewards, including Greater Lair Keys. Helltides, World Bosses, Legion Events, Tree of Whispers caches, and other endgame activities help build the standard-key supply. Initiate Hoards may also provide Stygian Stones, giving you a flexible way to convert materials toward a missing Greater key type instead of waiting for one exact drop.
Stage | Resource | Best Use | Initiate Boss | Standard Lair Key | Build Greater-key access | Greater Boss | Greater Lair Key | Target selected Uniques | Corrupted Reaper | Superior Lair Key | Pursue Mythics and Pandemonium Fragments | What I Wish I Knew Earlier
Don't judge a farming route by the boss kill alone. Time the entire cycle from leaving town to opening the Hoard, then compare several runs rather than trusting one lucky streak. At least in my experience, the biggest losses come from switching activities too often, carrying too many low-value items, and spending keys before deciding which slot actually needs an upgrade.
Choose War Plan rewards that fit activities you already clear quickly.
Save standard keys for a focused batch of Initiate runs.
Open every eligible Hoard instead of leaving progression materials behind.
Keep Stygian Stones for the Greater boss whose Unique pool fits your build.
Store Greater Lair Keys until you have a clear item target.
Returning Uniques Need More Than Nostalgia
Season 15 previews list Leoric's Crown, Nemesis Bracers, Stone of Jordan, Squirt's Blouse, Arioc's Needle, Henri's Perquisition, In-Geom, The Furnace, and Messerschmidt's Reaver. Four are listed for every class, while the others serve selected class groups. Messerschmidt's Reaver is planned but wasn't active in the test build described in the preview, so don't lock a seasonal build around its final version yet.
The interesting question isn't whether these names are famous. It's what decision each item forces. Leoric's Crown, presented as jewelry, changes how you think about the helm slot and its gem interaction. Stone of Jordan has to earn a ring slot against established resource and damage options. Two-handed weapons such as The Furnace and Arioc's Needle must justify the loss of weapon flexibility, while Nemesis Bracers could make Shrine routing more attractive.
Build Around the Item You Have
The proposed Season 15 Horadric Cube upgrade gives a strong Unique a longer lifespan by converting that same item into Mythic quality while preserving its affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking. The result carries a Crafted tag, and only one item made through this direct method can be equipped at a time. Since the feature is preview content, costs and restrictions may change, but the design gives you a reason to inspect a near-perfect Unique instead of instantly salvaging it.
For live Season 14, focus on the key ladder first: standard keys into Initiate Hoards, Greater keys into targeted boss rewards, and Superior keys from Deathtoll Chambers when your goal shifts toward the Corrupted Reaper. For Season 15, watch the test notes before committing rare materials. A focused loot plan beats blind RNG, and spending carefully leaves more room for the upgrades that actually change your build. That is also the point where Diablo 4 Gold for sale can support convenience without replacing the decisions that make endgame farming satisfying.
